This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am a dedicated elementary teacher currently teaching first grade. Each year students come to me with a wide range of academic abilities. I feel that targeted small group instruction is an effective way for my students to practice and master their skills. With well-planned centers along with small group instruction, I know my students will be able to succeed.
It would be very beneficial for both my students and myself to always continue to improve my professional practice.
My Project
I consider myself a life long learner. I continue to look for ways to improve professionally because I know that this will benefit my students. I will continue to grow in ways that directly affect my students. My area of focus is on early literacy because I know that if a child can read well in the early years of their education, they will have a strong foundation. Every year there are some students who do not enjoy reading because they find it difficult. They are not engaged and try to avoid it by becoming disruptive in the class. I would like to motivate these students to find a love for reading by strengthening all areas of my literacy teaching.
These students are just beginning to read and I want to make that experience as positive for them as I can.
The books that I have chosen will help me to get these reluctant learners engaged quickly and motivate them by making learning fun. These books will help to sharpen my skills by providing a refresher for me in phonics, which sets the foundation for decoding. I will also be able to increase student engagement with the attention grabbers making learning fun.
I am always looking for ways to make learning more enjoyable and engaging. It is important to continue to learn along with my students in order to improve my professional practice. When I am at my best then my students will be at their best.
