Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is located in an urban area. The school has an estimated enrollment of 400 students in grades TK-5, with fifteen classrooms. Additionally, we house a state Pre-K program. 92.5% of the students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch and 48% are English language learners. 46% of the students are Latino, 35% are African American, 10% are Asian, and 3% are Filipino.
The school has established a culture of continuous school improvement and has a team of teachers, parents, and administrators who are committed to creating the best possible learning environment for students.
Teachers meet weekly for a sixty minute period during the workday in their professional learning community to analyze student performance data, set goals, and share instructional strategies. These teacher teams follow a developed agenda and use protocols and defined roles to manage the meetings. These meetings are our district's cornerstone for building a professional learning community and improving student achievement.
My Project
This project will cover the registration fee and lodging so I can attend the California Mathematics Council North conference. This conference is a critical professional development event. Not only are there keynote speakers that give insight to current issues in mathematics education, but there are a plethora of breakout sessions that speak to practical instructional concerns and problems of practice.
As the Instructional Teacher Leader for my school, I work with a lot of teachers and students, and they depend upon me to stay abreast of the latest trends and innovative ideas in mathematics education.
I provide intervention support to our students who are most critically in need of support, so it is very important that I keep up my own professional learning to best be able to serve these students. The students at my school have a great need for support, and attending this conference will help me support their teachers in providing for them.
Additionally, I coach a mix of veteran and new teachers in Mathematics, so I need to keep my own learning current in order to help affect the greatest change in student learning.
