This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

It is undeniable that trans and non-binary teens need possibility models. They need to know that people like them survive their childhoods & that there are so many ways to live your best life as a trans adult! We live in a world that daily hurts these students because transphobia is deeply ingrained in our culture. It is so normalized, this hatred and disrespect, and it leads to all kinds of horrible outcomes. Even though my students attend school in San Francisco, they are definitely still navigating lots of challenges around coming out, dealing with family, being misgendered constantly, finding their gender expression, and this is obviously in addition to all the challenges that low income students and students of color are facing.

My students need to talk with trans author and visionary Charlie Jane Anders, to learn how to incorporate activism and community advocacy into your art, and to learn how to believe in yourself and survive as a trans person!

As an ally, I know it is my job to bring the adults my students need into our school & foster these connections. I love that she wants to come meet with my students, and I want to send my students home with her books! I want them to read about how to survive, dream, and create your way out of hard times, and I want them to have queer and trans YA fantasy to escape into when times feel even harder. Charlie Jane Anders is willing to give us her time, AND it is unfair to ask her to donate books as well.
