Our small school is located in one of our nation’s poorest congressional districts. The student population represents a diverse multicultural urban setting. At least 40% of our students are classified as Special Needs, and/or English Language Learners. The vast majority qualify for free or reduced-priced lunch.
Some of the students I service have very special needs. They have learning disabilities that include dyslexia and/or dysgraphia. Students with dyslexia have difficulty with reading and note taking as the letters are not encoded or translated properly. Dysgraphia students have difficulty expressing thoughts in writing. They often write incomplete words or misspelled words.
My proposal would give those students most in need a Netbook to use throughout their school day. They will be able to take notes via a keyboard and then edit their notes with the appropriate program. These Netbooks can also act as recording devices for those who need to replay a given lesson for reviewing purposes. Assignments can also be typed, edited and then emailed to teachers. This last feature would be incredibly useful to the dysgraphic students.
Our special needs students need additional support to be successful in high school. Using the technology offered by Netbooks would give them the resources to earn better grades in all disciplines, and to pass the New York State Regents exams that are mandated for graduation. As these students learn how to use the Netbooks, they will also be learning life-long skills that will serve them well in college and beyond.
High school should be fun and open young minds to a world of possibilities. My proposal will give those most in need the chance they deserve.
Thank you for your generosity.
