Netbooks for Special Education History

We teach a co-taught American History and World History classes in grades 9-10. Our classes are combined Special Education and General Education students. We have students with autism, learning disabilities, emotional impairments, cognitive impairments, hearing loss, and other health problems. We have been very successful so far mainstreaming these students into the co-taught environment.

Many of our Special Education students are reading and writing three years or more below their peers. With new curriculum and testing requirements, it is increasingly difficult for these students to succeed in class. We wish for all of out students to succeed and do the best they are capable of in all of our classes.

We wish to use Hewlett-Packard netbooks to assist our students in our History classes. Our new curriculum includes an online textbook that will read aloud to our students. Our students will also be able to write their papers on the computer and take advantage of spell check to produce quality products. With just two netbooks, we can institute peer groups of general and special education students to take turns working on different projects. We do not have computers in the classroom for the students to use. With the funding situation in Michigan, there are no funds to purchase the technology we need. With just two netbooks in our classroom, we can insure that our special education students will succeed.
