Sixth graders need to develop on-line research skills to complete required projects and prepare them for high school and beyond. Some of my students do not have internet access at home. With netbook computers, my students will be able to access excellent on-line math and science resources.
I teach sixth grade math and science to students from very diverse backgrounds.
More than 20 languages are spoken at our school, and half of the students qualify for free or reduced price lunch. Students' academic skill levels also vary widely. Since the transition to middle school is a big one for many of my students, I want to use all the tools available to help them all succeed. Students will use these netbooks for a range of math and science projects, including investigation of electrical energy sources, small-group math study sessions and on-line practice sets.
My Project
Sixth grade is a formative year for students as they transition from elementary to middle school. For many students, this is the first time they are exposed to more advanced math and science skills and learn how to work independently on math and science projects. Access to computers and on-line resources is particularly critical in 6th grade since we often see students --especially girls -- turning away from these subjects. These netbooks will increase access for all my students to the wonderful math and science resources that are available on-line. Advanced students can explore additional areas, while struggling students can reinforce basic skills Students will also use netbooks for an upcoming science research project investigating electrical energy sources.
Instilling a love of science, technology and math education in 6th graders is critical to helping students succeed in these subjects in middle school, in high school and later in life.
This project will bring critically needed netbooks to my classroom, will help students access on-line resources, and will give students without home computers their only access to small group computer learning and on-line resources. Students love learning with computers and this project help them do it!
