Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a public school in San Bernardino California, 98% of my students are socioeconomically disadvantaged, many live in apartments and tough situations. I grew up in San Bernardino and have a deep connection. Over three years ago we started a running program and over 120 students participated over the course of 4 months we ran over 1500 miles. Last year we had over 300 runners and 18000 miles ran, phenomenal! Last year we also had 6 different intramural sports we played against other local elementary schools, the sports were soccer, volleyball, flag football, basketball, track and field, softball. This year we are doing the same but need more practice equipment.
The students consistently ask if there is going to be more Intramural Sports programs.
As their PE teacher, I know it is tough for them to be physically active when it is not safe to go outside so I offer as many chances as I can to get them moving. Please help in any way you can, and feel free to share!
My Project
I have the great opportunity to coach students who have never played organized sports, I would like a variety of equipment (Nike Soccer balls, Tetherballs, and Basketballs) so every student has a chance to practice at their own skill level. Here in San Bernardino, we are creating opportunities for parents, students, and teacher to promote healthy lifestyles, with the side of good sportsmanship. You will ensure that students here in San Bernardino get plenty of practice time, game time and family support time. We will be able to use all of this equipment all year, we take care of our equipment that is why I do not need Flag Football or softball gear this year. Thank you for supporting our awesome school! Our biggest challenge last year was starting an intramural program this year it will be making it better by having extra practice equipment. THANK YOU!!!
