Help me give my students a FUN and engaging reading experience. I need these black lights in order to create an environment that makes students excited to come with me and read!
My students are struggling readers in 5th and 6th grade. Can you imagine struggling with reading at that age? They are embarrassed and being pulled out of class for reading groups is not always their favorite thing because of the social stigma reading groups seems to carry. That is why I want to make my room a FUN learning experience. A place that they look forward to coming and that is a safe space for them to learn to read better every day. I want to set my readers up for success. I do not want the fear of reading to stop them from pursing their dreams. They can do it and I am here to help them!
My Project
My number one goal this year is ENGAGEMENT! I am a Reading Specialist that works with 5th and 6th grade struggling readers. My students have spent their entire school career feeling unsuccessful as readers. Not only that, buy by 5th and 6th grade, the social stigma of being pulled out of the classroom is also another obstacle. Searching for a way to make it fun and exciting, I read a book called Wild Card this summer. It was written by Hope and Wade King who are teachers at the Ron Clark Academy and masters of student engagement. They specialize in room transformations that make learning an interactive activity. Students walk into their rooms and are transported to a new place.
I am requesting black lights because they can be used for multiple reading activities in my room.
First, they can be used for Neon Read-On, which allows students to become engaged in their ability to highlight details in text. It is a fun way to work on a skill that has not always been exciting for them in the past. Second, I plan to use the black lights to create the Federal Bureau of Reading Investigation. Students will leave their classroom and come to the FBRI where they will work as agents to discover reading clues and help them solve the case.
Activities like this make learning FUN and best of all engaging for readers who have otherwise not been engaged by reading. Having the opportunity to make my room engaging and fun makes students less embarrassed to leave with me because everyone in the class knows my classroom is a blast and they want to come too. Help me "SET THE STAGE TO ENGAGE." (Hope and Wade King)
Help me make reading an exciting experience for my struggling readers!
