The Neighborhoods Project was developed by two teachers at E.K. Powe Elementary in Durham, North Carolina in collaboration with the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University. This project integrates many skills that students need to be successful in learning, including reading, writing, drawing, photography, and social skills. The students will begin to think about where they live, what it means to live in a community, and how some neighborhoods are the same and how some are different. The students will learn how to take photos, listen to and question guest speakers and the people in their neighborhood, draw their observations, and work cooperatively in groups. In order to effectively complete the project, the students will each need a disposable camera. There will be approximately 25 students participating in the project. The cameras will cost approximately $175 tax. Developing the film will cost approximately $200 tax. The students will use the cameras to take pictures of objects, people, and places in their neighborhood.
