My students are part of something truly special: a Waldorf-inspired public charter school in Western Colorado that began seven years ago in response to the need for better academic options. They thrive on stories, art, poetry, music, and movement as they learn about the world around them. We are a very active group and a big part of our day is reciting poetry, verse, singing, recorder playing, and visual arts. While my students participate in a handwork class twice a week, I would like to begin needle felting with them. They would benefit greatly from a class set of needle felting supplies such as foam blocks, needles, and wool roving that we could keep with the class and not have to share with the rest of the school.
My Project
I have been needle felting birthday crowns and other projects for my students since first grade. Now that they are in fourth grade, I think they are ready to create some needle felted projects of their own. I would like to start with some braided forms in felt, practicing first with Wikki Stix to observe how the pathways travel over and under to create the form. Next, we will create Celtic knots on flat felt with wool roving. While my students have handwork class twice a week, we have had some difficulty getting time to use the borrowed felting mats. How fantastic it would be to have their own set that stayed with their class that they could use for more complex felting projects as the years progress?
