This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come in eager to please and be loved. They want to be recognized for achievements through "shout-outs" and rewards. They are funny and playful. The relationships and family atmosphere we create in the classroom is always the highlight of my school year.
My school is located in the South side of Chicago.
The neighborhood is known for violence and poverty. The school is 100% free or reduced lunch. It not only creates a safe haven, but also teaches the students to look beyond their surroundings and reach for higher goals. We are not just trying to get them into great high schools, but great colleges.
My Project
My students read at all different levels. They need novels that are challenging, but comfortable enough where they can be confident reading them.
With these sets of novels, I'll be able to group the students into book clubs.
In the book clubs, they'll read and discuss the novel. We can work on the current reading skills from our main lesson as we read, and end with a culminating activity.
Also, each of these novels has a theme of kindness and/or perseverance. Kindness and perseverance are two qualities that this class has struggled with, but has made a goal to achieve.
