My students are very special! They vary in age all the way from Pre-K to 8th grade. I am a citywide social worker, and I provide counseling services to special education students throughout Brooklyn and Queens. The degree of disability that my students have also varies greatly.
My students have autism, intellectual disability, visual impairment and emotional disturbance.
What makes my students most special is their desire to learn! Their thirst for knowledge and information and their desire to relate and connect with others, all while having to deal with the everyday challenges of their disability; and they do so with enthusiasm!
My Project
The materials in this project are counseling related manipulatives that will help me engage my students in meaningful counseling sessions. Counseling for adults is pretty straight forward, simply ask, "What's on your mind?" With children, it's not that simple. Children are still learning to verbally articulate their feelings And so simply asking them the same question will not render the same verbal response that you would get from an adult. Children express themselves more easily through art and games and I‘d like to give my current supply of counseling tools a boost with new materials.
In this project, I have selected therapeutic prompt cards, games, drawing materials and a social skills video that will allow me to engage my students in counseling through play, freedom of expression and an interactive video.
The games I have selected focus on social skills building, expressing feelings, impulse control and making good choices. The scented markers will entice them to express themselves through artwork and the video will allow my students to observe appropriate social behavior, spark Group discussions and even segway into role play of appropriate social behavior.
Each year, I like to add a few new materials to give my students and assortment of variety and activities they can engage in during counseling. And with the generous help of donors like you, I can continue to provide my students with meaningful, therapeutic counseling sessions that will promote their academic success .
