My Students
My pre-kindergarten to second-grade students attend a low-income school in coastal South Carolina. They have disorders that include language, stuttering, and speech sound. These disorders are impacted by their autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and various learning disabilities. Their ability to communicate ranges from non-verbal to speaking in full sentences. Image having something to say but not being able to say it. Their desire to talk to their families, peers, and teachers is STRONG. Unfortunately, our school has limited funding and a great need for supplemental educational materials.
My Project
Whole classroom instruction using speech therapy apps can provide nonverbal children and those who struggle to speak clearly, with a voice for the first time. This assistive technology can help my students develop a phonemic awareness, vocabulary, increase their reading comprehension, and provide them with a key to understand language.
An USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter would allow me the opportunity to provide group instruction using apps from their iPod Touches.
Apps that use specific sounds, paired with pictures, to help students with speech sound disorders, autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and other learning disorders. There are apps that target receptive language, expressive language, reading, and social language. Apps like SonoFlex, Proloquo2Go, and Visuals2Go can unlock the communication barrier for my students.
Now that we have iPod Touches for my students, they need cases to kid-proof them. Keeping the devices in protective cases will allow the students to use them at lunch, recess, and in the hallways. They also need holsters to keep their devices on them while moving about the classroom, school, and playground.
