Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students come from a variety of different economic and cultural backgrounds with about 95% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch. Our families often struggle to provide basic needs for their children, let alone school supplies. Our school is also one of the most ethnically diverse schools in our district, as we have students from over 40 different countries and speakers of over 20 different languages. Majority of the population are English language learners, many of whom are refugees or asylees from other countries. We strive to use creative and effective ways of communicating with students and families in order to bridge cultural gaps. In addition, many of our students have experienced or have been exposed to some type of trauma. Because of this, we also strive to give our students and families resources for dealing with these traumatic events, as well as to meet the emotional needs of our students while at school, so that they can be available for learning. We firmly believe that all students can learn and are capable of amazing things!
My Project
As a special education resource teacher, I have to share a room with multiple educators and other support staff. Many times, my students need a safe space where they can come to find peace before returning to their classrooms. Due to the variety of disabilities and needs of my students, at times, the hustle and bustle of the classroom can be overwhelming, causing them to have difficulty focusing on instruction and on their assignments. This can severely impact their ability to learn and master important skills. These students often request a break in my room.
These donations will allow me to create a space where they can not only focus on my small group instruction, but a place where they can find some relief as needed.
Some of the supplies will also allow them to tolerate the classroom, preventing the need for these breaks. The supplies can additionally help me to create a quieter and tranquil environment for teaching coping strategies to improve emotional regulation, while increasing classroom tolerance. The donations will allow my students to better access the general education classroom, as well as to provide a more focused and calming learning environment.
