Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
What makes my students special is their drive to learn! This year I have students who are in their first year of full English instruction. It's exciting to see their determination to learn in a language that is relatively new for them in terms of academics.
My students are from the first or second Mexican American generation, and they live in a 95% minority neighborhood.
Ninety-five percent of these students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. Our school is 95% low income and is located in the heart of a community that is changing drastically. The majority of our teachers are extremely hardworking and work extended hours in order for us to provide the best education to our students!
My Project
Working in low income schools means always looking for resources for students who can't afford the simplest tools like a pencil and glue. Pencils, glue and paper are daily tools we use in our classroom. However, these are the materials that quickly run out in the first two months. Making sure my students have the necessary materials to write, glue and practice is very important to me.
Students need to show their thinking in different ways!
Having these materials allows for students to show their thinking by writing or drawing. The glue is an essential tool since students use it for various tasks like sorting their spelling words, interactive grammar sheets or literacy culminating project. The ream of paper allows me to make copies of books, worksheets for extra practice and center comprehension sheets. These sheets inform me of students learning week after week. Please help me make sure I have the essential surviving tools for my class.
