My students need to express themselves so that they can heal from the trauma of our school getting hit by a tornado. I have requested paper, Post-its, glue sticks, colored pencils, highlighters, and a chair.
Did you ever have something happen to you that was so traumatic that you could not put into words what was wrong? Students need to heal and by being able to draw pictures or color something that makes them happy or write about what happened and to help them forget or heal would help so much.
Students at our school come from all backgrounds.
School is a safe place for them. On May 20, 2013, that safety was shaken when the tornado hit. Students were safe and were taken care of in the hours afterward. But, the devastation they looked at of their school and the surrounding neighborhood is something that will be with them forever.
My Project
I am requesting supplies like paper, glue sticks, colored pencils, and post-its. Students who come to my office will be able to use these supplies to express their thoughts of what they went through that day. They may choose to draw, color pictures or even write something that makes them happy, in an effort to try to heal from the day the tornado hit.
Being able to express what happened that day is a small step to healing.
Drawing pictures that make a child happy is good medicine. I hope you will consider helping these students heal. Sometimes it's the small things that make the greatest impact.
