Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Most come from low-income families where reading and other educational materials are "luxury" items.
Additionally, our class contains children from diverse backgrounds and circumstances. Many come from homes where English is not spoken or not spoken fluently, some are in the foster care system, and some have physical and/or speech challenges to overcome. Fortunately, at this age, all students benefit greatly from experiences and touchable, movable manipulatives, so I try to provide these opportunities as much as possible. My Project
My first graders are at a critical juncture in their reading journey. This is often the year they decide to either love reading or loathe it. Please help me cultivate in them a passion for print by providing them with engaging, quality full-color Weekly Reader and Science magazines.
As a child I always looked forward to taking my Weekly Reader home to peruse and interact with again and again--Wouldn't it be wonderful to give that gift to these little ones as well?
The value of these magazines is priceless. Not only do they support beginning literacy, but they also help my students see that there is a world outside of the city they live in...and beyond their video games. These readers help my students realize that there are countless possibilities for their lives if they are willing to work hard. Please consider supporting my classroom in this effort. Thank you!
