The culture of our school is tightly woven with cultural and ethnic diversity, and it is a beautiful place to be! The children have a desire to learn no matter---or, perhaps, because of---the circumstances from which they come.
Many students at my school have recently emigrated from other countries, some with only the clothes on their back.
Diversity is defined as the state of having people who are different races or who have different cultures in a group or organization. "Diverse" is the word that best describes my school.
Our students come from over 30 different nations, and many of them have little or nothing when they arrive at our doors. Our families have a very high rate of poverty with over 85% living below the poverty line. We also have some of the highest taxed real estate in the city in our neighborhood, and, yes, the children who live in those houses also attend our school. Our motto is "From across the street and around the world," which truly describes us.
My Project
Due to COVID my school district has started the school year in a hybrid model. That's a positive thing because I have two small classes, but they are very diverse. I have students reading at 10 different reading levels and they need books to read at home. I don't have enough books in my classroom library for them to take home and also leave enough to read while they are at school. This project would give all of my students 6 books at their reading level to take home and read on their remote learning days.
I recently saw a quote, "A child who reads will be an adult who thinks." As a teacher I want my students to grow up to be thinking, contributing members of society.
In order for this to happen they need books at their level to read.
