My students need sensory and fidget items to use in an inviting teen-style furnished space to decompress and refocus so they can be productive engaged learners in their classrooms.
Students at my school live in very small rural communities and most come to school each day struggling to overcome and cope with a wide variety of backgrounds, home situations (including homelessness), and many who lack even the very basic necessities (such as power and running water). Though these students face countless adversities, they strive for normalcy in their school day and peer relationships. These students work incredibly hard to surpass the challenges and hardships they've been dealt.
It is important to remember that the emotional needs of students must be met in order for students to be productive learners and succeed academically.
I’m immensely proud of the students at my school. They are genuine, so kind, and respectful. They are hardworking, motivated, and have goals and future plans.
Nearly a third of our students have special education needs and over 50% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Mental health needs of our students exceed 50%.
We are a very small school and our resources are extremely limited. In fact, I do not have a guidance budget allotment.
My Project
By creating an inviting and calming atmosphere with comfortable teen-style seating and a variety of de-stress and anxiety reducing manipulatives, students will be able to learn and practice coping techniques to reduce anxiety, stress, fear, and anger, as well as regulate other emotional and physical symptoms. Specially, the variety of seating options, including dorm-like chairs and a beanbag will allow students to relax in comfy seating while decompressing with fidgets, reading, or music. The bench-table set with color-calming lamp will allow students a space to work on schoolwork, sand therapy, coloring sheets, or other manipulatives.
Providing a soothing space stocked with coping techniques will allow students to regulate emotions and return to class ready to focus and succeed.
This project is a big need for our school and has been discussed for quite a while though funding has never been established or prioritized. With your help, this space will enable us to meet students' emotional needs while teaching & providing coping skills in a safe and comforting environment so that students will return to class encouraged, productive, and refocused.
