Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a Title I high school with over 500 students in our ESOL department. The majority of these students are from Latin America where soccer is a passion. The game is a central part of their culture. Many of these students do not participate in traditional high school sports such as football, basketball, and baseball. There is there is a big demand for playing soccer in our school
Having an extracurricular soccer program for boys and girls would help to meet the need for our students to play soccer.
Recently 150 students tried out for JV and varsity soccer teams. There were only 44 slots available for those two team. Therefore the majority did not get to play the sport they love. Those who don't play on the school teams would get the opportunity to play and enjoy the game after school.
We would practice drills, and play games so that students would get a chance to improve their skills and enjoy the sport by playing small-sided competitive games also. We could also build a study hall session into this, where students would be able to complete homework, read a book, or study for an upcoming test.
My Project
My students will be able to play, and enjoy the game of soccer with these basic equipment. The cones will be used to mark out grids and other areas to do practice drills. The balls will be used for individual, pair, and small group practice when repetition will be an important factor in practicing skills. Different color scrimmage vests will be used as uniforms to identify teams in game-related practices and actual matches. I'm requesting shorts and socks so that teams will have uniforms when they compete against each other. The bag for balls and the bag for scrimmage vests will be used to make easier to carry and store them.
Donations to our soccer program will help students to practice and play soccer, improve their social skills, and motivate them in their academic work.
The program will include both boys and girls, and practices will be geared towards playing in a 3 versus 3 game format in a competitive but fun environment. Each team will have 5 players on its roster, and have its own team uniform. We will run the program two days a week over a 10-week period for 90 minutes each session. One day for boys and one for girls. Each session will begin with technical/tactical ball drills in grids, and will end with competitive team games.
