Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
From the first day of school, I have discussed with my students the idea of them being scholars. We discuss what is means to be a scholar and how important it is to continue their education and go to college. My students are excited about the idea of college. I tell them that a college education is necessary for them to survive in this demanding society we live in. We discuss basic needs and how a low wage job at McDonalds or Wal-Mart cannot support them or their future family.
However, most of my students do not have any experience of what it takes to go to college or what happens there. They have no family members who have gone to college and they have never been on a college campus.
They are first or second generation immigrants with parents who had little or no education in Mexico. Their families speak Spanish and believe in education for their children; however they do not understand the idea of higher education.
This is the very reason why I want to provide a college experience for my students now, in 5th grade. I have to do more than talk about going to college; I have to take them to see college. They need the opportunity to walk around a college campus and meet college students, especially students who have similiar background.
Several local universities have just a program. They would welcome my students and help mentor them. But neither they nor my district will fund such a trip. The opportunity to start developing a relationship with college is free, but the bus ride is not.
I am requesting a field trip to visit a well known university, Universtiy of Southern California, that has an outreach program specifically designed for elementary students at risk. You can help by paying for the bus ride and providing lunch for my students.
Please help me provide my students with the exposure and experience of college. That experience will influence their decisions to set high academic goals for their life. Talking about college is simply not enough. My students need to be able to talk about college using their own personal experiences.
