I teach a 4th grade class with diverse educational levels and abilities. Over half of my class of students come from lower economic homes. This class is starting to progress and grow their reading skills. I have a mix of students at a variety of levels.
Fifty-five percent of my students have started the year below benchmark levels in reading.
This is a lower class than many I have worked with. They need time reading texts that they are motivated to read.
Our class is working very hard at making growth as we redo our curriculum pieces to focus more on non-fiction. My 16 boys and 10 girls are excited for new opportunities to read! I love these students but they need opportunities to love books!
My Project
We have added a few new books this year to an ancient library that needed updating. Kids are sitting in line for graphic novels like the "Amulet" and the Baby-Sitter's Club series.
These new books are constantly off the library shelf and in the hands of students with others in line for the next book!
I have also connected students to Audible so they can listen as they read, which brought reading motivation to each student. We were so excited to open the last box of new books!
Students are excited for the possibility of these books. I can't get them fast enough! Please help us reach our goal of new books!
