My eighty 5th-7th grade students have been waiting for over a year for stringed instruments. These south-side Chicago middle schoolers are hard workers, going to school for nine hours a day, and are doing everything they can to climb the mountain to college, despite the obstacles they face. And we have dreams of performing concerts throughout Chicago, yet we can't start playing until we have at least fifteen more instruments. Last year, each student learned to play the violin, using instruments that were loaned to us from a nearby school. This year, we are not able to use those instruments and are having so much trouble finding the resources we need. My parents have been searching for instruments back in my home town in Washington state and colleagues are exhausting their resources, but it still hasn't yielded us the numbers we need. Having these instruments would finally allow us to focus on making music instead of finding instruments. The children did an amazing job in their first year and I can only imagine what this year holds once we start on our way. Please help my students reach their potential and continue to discover the lifelong benefits of playing an instrument.
