Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach English in an urban high school that serves a high-need community, with only 16% of our 9th graders entering high school reading on grade level.

My school does not have many academic extra-curricular activities. Students who do not join the sports teams often end up somewhat disengaged from the school culture. A group of students have recently chosen to help launch a school-wide on-line newspaper. The school currently does not have a newspaper and the students are very excited to be the founding members. The newspaper offers a wonderful opportunity for students from different grades to meet and support each other (older students become mentors for younger students, etc). Our school has been able to purchase an on-line newspaper program, but unfortunately we cannot afford other necessary supplies. Students have limited access to well-functioning computers. Currently, our biggest obstacle is that we have no way to include photojournalism in our paper. Digital cameras aren't within our budget but would add so much to the paper's professionalism and the students' experience and engagement.

With 6 digital cameras, the students would be able to include images of school sports, events and activities with the articles they write. Images would make our on-line newspaper immediately more impressive and professional--something the students could truly be proud of.

You will make it possible for our students to experience true journalism and become passionate about an extra-curricular activity. (One that will be a great asset to them in the process of applying to college!). These digital cameras would make a huge difference in the experience of our hard-working, aspiring journalists. Soon, we will have a school newspaper that will make not only its creators proud but the entire student body.
