Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are high-poverty, high-needs, and wonderfully diverse. The school is at the highest percentage of FRL (free and reduced lunch) in the county at 83%, and has a diverse population of about 60% Latino, 35% African American, and 5% other. The school has a high transient population and most students start high school at or below grade level in reading and writing. Despite all of the challenges that face them every day, my students provide a wealth of knowledge for me and are the most resilient kids I've ever met. They are creative and want to learn.
My Project
The third unit we teach in Ninth Grade Literature is about American Social Movements. Students choose a movement that interests them and then they read, research, and teach the rest of the class about that movement. This year, we are trying to use culturally relevant fiction books to have students read and use the information to supplement their research. Students can research the LGBTQ movement, the Immigration movement, the Women's Movement, The Black Lives Matter movement, the #metoo movement, the Civil Rights movement, and the Bullying movement.
Your support will provide high-interest, culturally relevant books to high-needs students.
These books will teach students about their social movement and allow for a small group reading experience. Minority students need to see themselves as the heroes of the literature they read, and this project will help provide this reading experience for my students.
