My students need two iPads and cases to support and differentiate the literacy and math curriculum.
Do you remember the first time you were so entranced by a game that you had a hard time putting it down? My students beg to use the iPads we have, which helps make learning engaging, meaningful and fun. Now, if only every student could experience this by having iPad devices available to them.
The students in my classroom are an energetic, imaginative bunch of seven and eight year olds who are eager to learn.
I teach in a rural, Title 1 school where living in poverty is common. We also have a large ELL population approximating 30% of our student population. My students learn best when they can use hands-on materials and games. They also need to be highly engaged through the use of manipulatives, pictures, sound, video or realia to hold their attention span and make learning fun and interesting.
I am requesting two iPad mini's and protective cases for my classroom. I have been lucky enough to receive three other iPads through grants. I also use my personal iPad in the classroom because these devices are highly engaging and they enhance their learning. The applications available, not only motivate my students, but are great for group work as well as for students who need individualized assignments, either to challenge them or to work at a lower level. With two more devices, I would have enough iPads for all of my students to work in a small group of 4-5 on one device. Many games and apps on the iPad have a four person player capacity. By receiving these devices, my students could write stories, create presentations, listen to animated books, play leveled math games related to common core standards and use reading apps to help improve their comprehension, fluency, vocabulary and accuracy.
This project is so important to me because I feel technology is a great way to motivate and engage my students.
I also feel knowing how to use technology is an essential skill for students to have. Having these devices will allow me to do many projects, such as creating presentations and books as a class that I cannot do now, with the limited number of devices we have available. These iPads will also be available for students to work on independently, in order to improve their learning.
