Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students live in inner-city neighborhoods known for gang violence and drug activity. These are really hard neighborhoods to grow up in. These neighborhoods make it difficult to focus on getting an education. But, my students have made a commitment to their future and are determined to become the first in their families to go to college. They attend a 6-12 grade secondary charter school on a University of California campus.
Our school’s mission is to prepare low-income, first-generation, highly motivated students to enter a four-year college or university upon graduation.
Our students attend an extended school day and year and take eight classes a semester with a rigorous single-track college preparatory curriculum. The student body is ethnically diverse, and our students live throughout the county, representing over 40 different zip codes. Students ride multiple modes of transportation to commute to our small school. I'm proud to serve 818 students this year.
My Project
I have students with no access to technology at home. All of my students will apply to college and for scholarships. This whole process happens online, and having access to a computer is imperative! These five Chromebooks will be used to help students research college and career options, submit college applications, type personal statements, apply to scholarships and much more!
These Chromebooks will also allow my students to do FREE SAT and ACT Prep online.
They don't have access to costly test prep classes, but they can participate in free online test prep due to having SAT and ACT Test fee waivers. They can't utilize these online test prep resources to practice their math and critical reading skills without a computer.
