Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you know what it's like to struggle to read independently or ever wish you could hear a story be read to you the way stories should be read? With a CD and headphones set students can unlock their reading skills potential to reach maximum heights!
I teach within a high poverty area at a Title 1 school.
It is a 3rd grade class of 15 girls and 11 boys who are filled with an internal motivation to succeed in everything they do, and have a great appreciation for knowledge. My students are so talented musically, as a special surprise for the class, some of them perform songs in front of the class on Fridays. The students inspire me to be as creative as I can be to provide them with the best learning materials and environment possible. I spend a great amount of time planning for lessons as well as money on the classroom.(You can see this in my uploaded picture)! I really think my students would benefit from a listening center because they would be able to hear and listen to a variety of stories that they might have trouble reading, and it would help them a lot with their reading comprehension. Many of my students are audial learners which means they would retain a lot of info with this remarkable tool.
My Project
With this CD player and headphones set, the students will be able to maximize their reading comprehension, decode unfamiliar words, practice reading fluency, recite learning songs and chants, and also develop more vocabulary words. I plan to have my students use this during their centers group time. Each day I have students go to 3 different learning centers. There are currently 6 centers. One of them is the library center. The students love to read but sometimes don't really get to enjoy a book as much as they'd like because there were words they couldn't read or pronounce. With a listening library, students will be able to not only read along to favorite classics, but become better and confident readers.
My project is so significant to my class because I know the students will develop stronger reading skills, vocabulary, reading intonation, and gain an even deeper love of reading when they can actually go and listen to stories they love!
Additionally, since they love music and singing, it would be a wonderful idea to incorporate some learning song CDs that teach things like times tables or certain sound spelling patterns! My students would enjoy this tool and it's use would never get old!
