I teach newcomers in grades k-5 who are mainly from Mexico, Honduras, and Puerto Rico. In total, I have approximately 60 ELL students with needs in a wide range of levels.
I teach at a high-risk school with 86% being low income.
I often attend ELL workshops in my county to learn about new strategies I can share with teachers. When I send out invitations for ‘parent day’, the room is filled. The support is here, but resources are lacking. My newcomers have a thirst for learning and come to my class before their scheduled time. Their eagerness to learn is clear to me. No matter what grade level they are placed in, my students still need a foundation for reading including sight words, vocabulary, phonics, and story structure.
My Project
I have a small room with which to teach 60 students throughout the day in all k-5 grade levels. I need this room to work in my students' favor for them to be successful. No one should learn in a cluttered atmosphere.
The command hooks will provide a place for headphones to hang on the wall.
Markers will used when I write sentence frames or vocabulary on the board or when students reflect and respond on white boards. I plan to use the tennis balls under the chair legs to keep noise level down and keep the floor from being scratched.
Cam Jansen books will motivate all of my 2nd graders to continue reading for enjoyment. I've seen how they loved our last detective series because of the element of suspense. I've researched which titles have the best reviews, and I have chosen a set accordingly. I want my students to have that "spark" and your funding
