It is my first year teaching at this particular school, and I have quickly realized that I am fortunate to teach 150 of the world's most phenomenal 8th graders! My students are intelligent, thoughtful, and absolutely hilarious. I feel so lucky to be their teacher.
My students have a variety of educational needs; some see middle school as a stepping stone to higher education, while some see it as a place where they can simply stay warm and dry or feel loved.
I love all of my students, and I enjoy hearing each individual's story. I am excited and eager to watch them all grow throughout this year.
My Project
One of the greatest focuses in my classroom is on independent reading. At the start of each period, I conference with individual students about what they are currently reading, what their book has taught them (academically and socially/emotionally), and what topics or characters have left an impact on them. Books have the power to transform these kids.
In order to keep students actively engaged and excited about reading, I need to keep my library current!
I'm hoping to fill my shelves with books that span a variety of genres, topics, and reading levels. Students check these books out to read both in class and at home, and we create various projects and have many discussions about their chosen literature throughout the year. This project gives my students more reading options, and I am always excited about the possibility of an 8th grader building a connection with a new book.
