Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are excited about learning! They love engaging, hands-on activities that allow them to have collaborative conversations, explore new topics, and use technology! School is one of the few places that allows some of my students to be curious and enhance their problem solving skills while still feeling successful and productive. One thing I really love about my students and the classroom culture we’ve created is the social-emotional relationships we build throughout the year with the use of mindfulness, classroom circles, and read alouds that help students gain understanding and insights to each other's feelings. Through SEL, students continually and constantly support each other and “Be the Change” they wish to see. Every week students focus on a way to help change our class, school, community, and world for the better starting with themselves. They continue to amaze me and remind me of my “why” as a teacher.
My Project
Did you know that being surrounded by scenes of nature actually reduce stress, anxiety, and anger? Many of my students face stressful situations that cause them to be filled with anxiety and anger daily. We utilize many SEL strategies in class such as mindfulness, family circles, flexible seating, and calming corners; but I want to give them so much more! Why just have calming corners when it could be the whole room? Bring the outdoors in, creating a calming environment with realistic nature elements.
These artificial hedges will help transform the classroom into a warm, welcoming environment that brings the feel of nature indoors, encouraging a healthier, lower-stress learning environment that can improve mental and physical well-being in students.
This is the first step in transforming our whole learning space and incorporating nature into the class decor and set up.
