My Students

Our fifth graders are a brilliant collection of stars, including those who are transitional bilingual, special education, and who receive free or reduced-price lunch. Our school is a Title I school with nearly 90% free and reduced lunch; however, our students are succeeding at or above the rate of their peers in the state.

The great majority of our K-5 students live in apartments, in a mostly urban environment.

The teachers and staff are highly committed to our kids. We strive for high rigor in learning, academically and socially. Our students persist in their learning because they believe that they can make sense of whatever they encounter and use it to better their world.

My Project

Students will cruise to nearby Blake Island State Park (near Seattle) to explore the 475-acre island which lies north of Vashon Island and south of Bainbridge Island. Exploration of a traditional Native American village, Northwest Native American storytelling, and traditionally-prepared alder fire-roasted salmon lunch are all part of this learning experience.

Learning about different cultures helps to expand the world-view of our students.

Many of our students have never had the opportunity to ride on a boat, or experience such traditional Native American culture. Helping them to see the world as a bigger place is not only helpful to their understanding of the world, this trip helps to support their learning about the native, indigenous peoples of our area.
