My students need Native American costumes to represent the culture of the Native American dance they are showcasing for the Spring Dance recital. These students, by studying the culture and history of the Native-Americans, represent beauty and respect.
My students are in a dance magnet program at my school. They have the dance magnet for 3 years. Many of our students go to the performing arts High school. Our annual Spring Concert includes students who have produced their own dance compositions. These dance compositions include props, costumes, lights and sound to represent their creations.
At my school, there are 3 bilingual classes in Spanish, Russian, and Chinese.
The diversity of the school gives students the opportunity to combine cultures and ideas. Working on the dance concert gives the students opportunities to network and collaborate on their ideas. I am proud of the diversity and knowledge that the students bring to all of our productions. Because of our diversity, we are able to partner with community organizations like the Brighton Ballet Theater to build the Russian traditions into the school to teach our students.
Having the right costumes for these cultural dances and thematic material take the feeling of the dance to the highest level giving our students a sense of pride about their cultural and the world in which we live.
My Project
Our theme for this year is children stories. These stories come to life by the choreography of the students. One of the stories we represent is Pocahontas. The children have listen to the music from the animated version of the film and they were able to choreograph a dance.
They were impressed with the cultural and beauty of the Native American culture.
Our students want to represent Native Americans in the best possible way. Showing the beautiful of Native Americans is very important to these students. By having the correct costumes the students will be proud to represent all the beauty, respect and appreciation they have for Native Americans which can be seen in their dancing. They don't want to do this dance unless they can honor this rich culture.
Dancing in costumes bring a professionalism and also builds self-esteem for the students. Seeing the smiles and the motivation they have for this culture makes us all proud to be part of this beautiful experience.
