I teach multiple levels of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL/ESL) in Beaverton, Oregon. My school serves a diverse neighborhood in a diverse city. In fact, 1 out of 4 people living in Beaverton was born outside of the United States. A number of these people and their families, many of whom are my students, speak languages other than English at home. As incredible as it sounds, over 40 different languages are spoken by my students.
Over 60% of my students are living in poverty; the struggle to meet basic needs and balance helping to financially support their families with school requirements is a genuine challenge.
Additionally, many of my students struggle to complete homework assignments due to lack of supplies and resources at home.
Each child in my classroom loves learning, although the method and environment in which they learn best vary greatly. I incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, and alternative seating and learning options to ensure that each student's needs are met, right where they are.
Your donation will help these students succeed not just in school, but as they prepare for the next chapter of their lives.
My Project
"There There" by Tommy Orange is an incredible book. It's about being a part of two different cultures, Native American and white cultures, about belonging and not belonging, and about the hard realities that these characters face. I am asking for an additional 30 copies of the book so that my class can be aligned with the other junior English classes, which will increase the impact of the project significantly.
This unit is replacing an antiquated unit on literature centered on white American history.
This book now provides students with a different viewpoint of this time period, a viewpoint that is frequently not included in public schools in general.
I am teaching this book as a part of a unit on Native American literature and history. When I am done teaching this unit, this class set of books will be available to other teachers in the building.
