The two young ladies this project will benefit are both MHS students. Last year, one of these young ladies visited the Arctic Village in Alaska. There, she learned about climate change, the land, the people, their way of living, and the oil drilling regulations. This impacted her so much that she decided to lobby in our nation's capital for H.R 1146 (aka the “Arctic Cultural and Coastal Plain Protection Act”) to protect the Arctic Refuge. She is a phenomenal advocate for youth, her community, and herself. The other young lady is quickly approaching the end of her time here at the high school and is looking forward to attending the local community college where she will study aviation. She volunteered at a day camp where she co-founded a program that linked local students to students in Kenya to share cultural customs related to education. When she first moved to the area, she had a difficult time relating to educational norms here and wanted to create a program to ease the transition for others.
My Project
This trip provides an opportunity for two young women at my high school to spend six amazing days in Washington, DC that will put them on the path to their future in Diplomacy, Intelligence, and Defense. They will join other high school students from around the country for this extraordinary opportunity to learn how America monitors potential threats, prepares for the crisis, and plans for peace.
At NYLF National Security, students have a unique opportunity to talk directly with national security experts, learn about the latest intelligence strategies, and experience public service in action.
Participating in NYLF National Security will enhance leadership skills and ultimately introduce students to a possible career in America’s national security, intelligence, or diplomatic fields. While they experience campus life at the University of Maryland, College Park, they will form friendships with future colleagues that will last a lifetime and gain the tools needed to help make their dreams a reality.
