Students love National Geographic magazine because of the beautiful photos, interesting articles, and hands-on activities. I want my students to have access to the recent, relevant, and exciting information that National Geographic Classroom magazine has to offer. Since I began teaching at my school two years ago, my students have never had access to recent, quality science textbooks or materials. I have struggled to teach them from textbooks outdated by over 20 years and absolutely no lab supplies. A colleague of mine gave my classroom an issue of National Geographic magazine one month and my students were ecstatic! They lit up when they read an articles on snakes. My students will benefit greatly from access to a high-quality monthly science publication. Instead of relying on piecemeal materials, they can each have access to a personal issue of National Geographic magazine for kids!I want my students to be able to experience the excitement of reading about science in action. Furthermore, I want them to get hooked on reading nonfiction periodicals. There is no better publication to get kids excited about science than this magazine. I teach 5th grade at a struggling school on Chicago's southside. The students are eager to learn, but are without access to the quality resources they so desperately need and deserve. Most of the students at my school are 1.5 - 2 grade levels below their suburban peers. The school was recenly put on probation, but was given an opportunity to restructure the school and staff. The new staff is enthusiastic about providing our students with a quality education; I know that I am. The materials necessary for this project is a one-year subscription for 35 students to National Geographic Classroom magazine. The subscription costs approximately $5.00 per student. The magazine subscription comes with a teacher's guide and monthly activities including ideas for hands-on science projects. Kids love science. They need access to materials that will foster thier curiosity about the world. My students do not have access to any quality science materials. Please help to provide them with an opportunity to nuture thier curiosity and gain experience reading challenge and relevant nonfiction text. I want my students to dream big; reading about the exciting world of science will surely cultivate career aspirations of astronomical proportions!
