Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is a hub for live discussion in mathematics. My door is open an hour before school for a class we call 'Early Bird' where we practice for math competitions - we're doing math before the sun comes up!
My students are extremely dedicated to bringing home math trophies from local, state and national competitions.
We practice every morning before school for one hour, and in addition an extra two hours on Tuesday's and Thursday's. That's a total of nine hours per week on extra-curricular engagement in mathematics. And it pays off: We consistently rank in the top ten nationwide. They are very serious about their work and college aspirations, and it is not uncommon for us to do university level work. I am very proud of my students and they continue to be an inspiration to me.
My Project
My students compete in geometry, algebra, calculus, statistics and number theory to name a few. The calculators I have requested are designed specifically for computations in these fields. With this technology, they will be able to render three-dimensional graphs as well as rotate them to get a full 360 degree view - something I cannot do with a dry-erase board. They will be able to run mathematical experiments, generate data and get a feel for the dynamics of mathematics. These calculators are meant to be used in the classroom, which includes during instruction as well as beyond the bell during the many extra-curricular hours they put in. My students aspire to be engineers, physicists, actuaries. The project's success will be measured in their readiness to realize these ambitions in college.
My students have a hard time conceptualizing and visualizing certain solids, surfaces or other mathematical shapes.
This has a huge impact on their ability to understand the theory presented in calculus about such objects. With this technology, the visual component that is grossly lacking in their instruction can finally be provided, and the change in their level of understanding will be immeasurable. All our students will bring home trophies!
