My Students
This project will provide military kids living on a military base in Anchorage, Alaska with new Non-Fiction books. All of the students at our school live far away from home while one of their parents serves in the military. Our school is Kindergarten through 6th grade and some of these students have lived on three different military bases in their short lives. Due to all this moving, they often don't have many social connections outside of the home.
Our students are used to living with one parent deployed for up to a year at a time. I am used to this as well because I am a military wife, raising military kids, and my husband is about to depart on his 6th deployment. I love being a part of this community and serving military kids.
My Project
The non-fiction section in our library has an average date of 2001. I can't let children read out of date information. This project will allow me to get a few books for each Dewey Decimal category. Our students love National Geographic books. They are full of useful information with colorful photos to keep readers interested. I want to replace the most out of date books in each section and these books will help to replace them.
When students checkout books from the library, I want to make sure they are reading correct and timely information. Nobody needs to be reading books about Pluto being a planet. Pluto has not been a planet since 2006 but I have books that still have Pluto listed as a planet.
