I am looking for funding that will provide a simple material that the students could utilize on a daily basis across grade levels. Writing is a basic skill that is stressed throughout the school day. It is a basic form of communication that exists in the natural world. So why not make the teaching of this basic skill a fun process! NASA (Notebooks Across Science Activities) is a project that can reinforce writing skills within the science classroom. Through science, all subjects are touched upon at one point or another. We use math to measure data within experiments, language arts to express our findings, social studies to make our findings relevant, and exploratory electives to add creative detail. All these basic skills reflect the writing process. To implement this year long project, I am looking for the funds to supply each student with Marble notebooks so they can record scientific investigations like a real scientist. Being the sixth grade science teacher, I hope to implement these activities as the students enter middle school so they can have consistent records throughout their middle school experience. This project will be used by the science department of the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades throughout the year. Each science teacher has the privilege of teaching the entire team of students allowing them to service all the students of the school. The students would utilize their notebook during lab experiments, journal writing, note taking, poster design, reflections, and the planning of projects. All these separate projects integrate other subject matter reinforcing their math and language arts skills. This would also benefit students going into the seventh grade because it would enhance their writing skills for the end-of-grade writing test. I would love students to see the real life application of the scientific proces, and hopefully view different science careers that they have been exposed to in the multiple inquiry activities.
