Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach an off-site program for 9th grade students whose least restrictive environment is within an alternate setting. My students are students with disabilities and my goal with them is to really foster a love of learning specifically pertaining to reading and literacy skills and integrated arts as it relates to social-emotional learning. These students come from diverse backgrounds and have not had experiences in school with which they connect. I'm hoping this program can change that experience for them!
My Project
The materials I am requesting will be used within the off-site, alternative setting for students with significant emotional-behavioral disabilities. My students have not personally connected to school as adolescent students and I am hopeful that with the right environment and applicable materials, this year will be the year they feel confident in who they in all the roles they play in their individual lives and how they contribute to a community. The books I have selected have characters which are a reflection of the students I teach and are considered high interest novels. The art supplies will help integrate art into literacy and social-emotional learning. Bean bags offer options for seating while accessing community, off-campus space.
