This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at an inner-city school that services many amazing, caring, and wonderful students. Even though most of them live in poverty and have experienced some tough things in their young lives, most of them come to me with a positive attitude to learn and grow.
They love to read, and they get very excited when new books are purchased for them.
“Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most patient of teachers.”
― Charles William Eliot
My Project
My students read in the classroom if they finish their work, and they are required to read every night at home. Every two weeks (or earlier if they finish the book), my students borrow a book from me and read it. They discuss it with me, with their peers, and they reflect on the book in writing. In addition, they take an Accelerated Reader quiz on their book to measure their reading comprehension skills.
Since reading counts for 15% of their final grade in language arts, it is very important that I always offer books that will excite my teen readers.
