Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We all have feelings!! As a school counselor for over 900 students, this is a theme I reinforce daily! My students are in the process of overcoming challenges that we as adults can struggle to handle. They need to know it's okay to be sad, angry, frustrated and even happy!
Two students stopped by my counseling office this week.
The first, a student I have been working with for a while and the second a friend of hers that I haven't met, yet. She just came to say hello as she is doing well and needs me less and less. Her friend asked, "What is this office, ISD(In School Detention)? My student replied, "No. This is the counseling office. When you are having problems in your life at home, you can come talk to her and she helps you figure them out and feel better" My heart is full!
My Project
My students need to know the words for what they are feeling and how to properly express themselves. These materials, such as the Empowering Question Cards, therapy games, and books, will help me provide a kid friendly curriculum and a safe space to learn that we all go through difficult stuff and it's okay to ask for help! Who wouldn't want to play with Kimochis while figuring out what's in their heart! These items give us the chance to learn while playing and making it safe to talk about our experiences and our feelings. We can learn coping skills such as taking deep breaths, walking away, being mindful and most of all laughing!
