Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
AVID is a college prep program that helps students in the AVID elective class successfully navigate their way TO and THROUGH a four-year university. The students meet together in the elective class for all four years of high school and they engage in content that helps build their college-ready skills as well as their college knowledge.
This year my AVID elective class students are seniors and graduating!
In my class we have students who live in poverty, students who belong to ethnic and racial groups that are underrepresented in college, and students who will be the first in their family to attend college. They have all pushed themselves during their high school career to take more rigorous courses, like honors and AP courses, and engage in extra-curricular activities to develop both their academic and emotional preparation for college.
My Project
My students are preparing to go off to college, but as so many of them will be first in their family to do so, they do not have as much guidance about the process as much of their peer group.
Reading "The Naked Roommate and 107 Other Issues You Might Run Into in College" will help my students mentally and emotionally prepare for one of the most challenging transitions and one of the most significant times of their lives.
We will read the text together and use it to jumpstart honest discussions about so much more than just the education students will be exposed to over the next four years.
