Our school is a Title 1 school. That means that more than half of our students live in a poverty situation. We have about 500 students ranging from Pre-K to 6th Grade. Many of these students and their families lack opportunities that provide them new experiences that are not only fun, but educational as well.
My students are inquisitive, enthusiastic, creative, and eager to immerse themselves in an environment that provides them with interactive, hands-on experiences!
They absolutely love opportunities that allow them to become actively involved in challenges, show their creativity, and become responsible for their own learning. They come to school each day ready to experience new things and take chances in order to grow both personally and academically. I am inspired by them every day!
My Project
Do you remember what it was like as a child to go to the zoo and see all of the wild and exotic animals? Did you have an opportunity to touch them and interact with them? Do you still remember the excitement and what you learned from that experience? We are planning our school wide STEM Night (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), and I would like to bring an experience like this to our students. The Phoenix Herpetological Society is a non-profit organization. It is a facility that focuses on surrenders, rescues, rehabilitation, and relocation of (primarily) reptiles, and conservation of our desert ecosystem. They have reptiles that are both native and non-native to Arizona. They also have education programs and summer camps for children.
Your donation to this project will allow our students to learn about and interact with animals and reptiles that are native and non-native to our desert and to learn about how important conservation and preservation is.
Our students will benefit by learning the importance each animal plays in our ecosystem, and why conservation and preservation is vital. While many of our students are afraid of some reptiles, (snakes or alligators), this is an opportunity for them to realize how important they are to our environment. Maybe this experience will inspire some of our students to become environmental scientists!
