At my school, the teachers, parents, and students work together to establish the best possible working and learning environment. I feel privileged to be part of a community that comes together to do what is best for kids and to be supported by a PTO that shows up daily to support the work going on in the classroom. I feel deeply bonded with the students in my class this year, because I have had the privilege of being both their third and fourth grade teacher. Since I already know these students well, I know the kinds of books that will interest and inspire them.
“Imagination is everything.” -Albert Einstein
I have been able to share many wonderful books with this group of students. Some of their favorites have included wildly imaginative stories such as The BFG, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, The Phantom Tollbooth, The Mysterious Benedict Society, and The Magician's Nephew, so I am eager to introduce them to A Wrinkle in Time. Last year, they showed an intense curiosity during our brief unit on mythology. I am looking forward to exploring this interest more deeply this year in connection with our fourth grade standards.
My Project
As we delve deeper into mythology, I want our class to have access to the adapted Tales from the Odyssey by Mary Pope Osborne as we study this famous work. I would also like them to have access to other books about mythological creatures and characters to deepen their study and satisfy their interests.
I believe that it is important for reading and learning to be fun and relevant!
A Wrinkle in Time will be released in theaters as a movie this March, and I want my students to enjoy the book first! Since the text will be beyond the reading level of many of my students, I plan to read the original novel aloud to them and support the challenging text by having them read copies of the graphic novel version to support their comprehension and to provide exposure to this genre. Many of my students love to read graphic novels, but some have never tried one. I am excited for this opportunity to teach both graphic novel and science fiction genres with this classic book!
