This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
As the culmination of a unit integrating science investigations and mystery stories, 7th grade students will use scientific techniques and materials to solve a mystery at the Museum of Science and Industry. In the Learning Lab, the students will first gather clues from interviews. They will then use microscopes, x-ray and MRI images, and fingerprint analysis to solve the mystery.
This experience will be an exciting and challenging way for the students wrap up this unit. Students will have the opportunity to use the strategies that both scientists and characters in mystery stories use to solve their problems, since the Learning Lab will bring to life a mystery story that can be solved with science. My students, who live on the West Side of Chicago, rarely have an opportunity to visit this museum. Participating in this lab will certainly be a meaningful and memorable part of their academic work.
