Stephen King said, "Books are uniquely portable magic." My students live in high poverty, rural area that is a book desert. Literacy is the best shot these students have to improve their lives.
My students look forward to sacred reading time every day.
They are learning that there are books that interest them. Most of my students, come from homes where reading is not a priority and they are not encouraged to read. However, my students are learning that books can take them out of the less than ideal situations they live in and transport them to faraway places. Books serve as my students' windows and mirrors. Windows to places they may never get to go and mirrors of their own lives to let them know they are not alone.
My Project
One of the easiest ways to keep students reading is to hook them on a series. My students need books from the Heros of Olympus book series. I have succeeded in getting many of my students to read these books. However, I need help keeping them supplied with the next book. I have a group of football players that have discovered that they actually like to read. They like to read the same books at the same time and try to out read each other. That has led to students from different classes reading the same book because I don't have enough copies for everyone that wants to read it at the same time.
