Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I provide bilingual speech and language therapy to students, in both an individual and group setting. A typical day in my class usually consists of three students and myself. Most of the students I work with have literacy and writing difficulties. I say, "Be the change you wish to see in the world."
My students are all unique, and that's what makes each and every one of them special to me.
They are kind and loving individuals, despite the hardships that they face on a daily basis. Most of them live in shelters, or come from a family, where either one parent or both parents are not present. They come from a low socioeconomic background, and therefore, have limited use in materials, especially technology. They are eager to learn; however, they tend to give up on themselves easily. Most of my students tell me, "I can't," even before attempting a task. They all need extra help, especially in their decoding, comprehension, and writing skills. They need to be engaged in order to learn. Most of their parents are focused on food and shelter, and therefore academics isn't given as much of a priority. My students need to be aware of the importance of academics, and of how each and every one of them plays an important role to society, both now and in the future.
My Project
My students will be able to use the MacBook Air for a variety of purposes. Most of them are visual learners; therefore, technology, such as the use of the MacBook Air, will engage and stimulate them to learn. My students, who are usually provided services in an individual setting, or in small groups of three, depending on the severity of their disorder, can use the MacBook Air for the development of their decoding, comprehension, and writing skills. They will be able to have access to programs such as Starfall, a website they do not have access to in their home setting. Through such websites, they can work on their decoding skills, with my assistance. They will be able to read passages from the MacBook Air, and answer targeted comprehension questions presented to them. They will also be able to work collaboratively, and type summaries of what they have read, on the keyboard provided. They will also be able to develop their pragmatic skills, taking turns with one another on its use.
According to the Common Core for 3rd graders, "with guidance and support from adults, students will use technology to produce and publish writing (using keyboarding skills) as well as to interact and collaborate with others." The use of technology will definitely change my students' lives for the better by enhancing their work and giving them something to look forward to.
My students need to look forward to attending school, and using the latest technology will encourage them to learn.
