Our school's students have a wonderful curiosity that makes my job as the science teacher such a wonderful experience. With so many classes and only me to teach science, I need to find creative ways to bring engaging and instructional online science resources to all our teachers. Finding cultural bridges between science and the arts allows me to better differentiate my instruction and lessons for all my students.
Our Title I elementary school has a diverse population of students who all qualify for free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch.
My science classes are comprised of General Education, English Language Learners, and Special Education students from many different cultures, and all with a variety of learning styles. They are exciting to watch in action and all love to try and discover. So many times I'm overwhelmed at their competence and determination to learn and achieve.
My Project
For over three years my science students have been watching different American Bald Eagle nests around the country. We've been able to see the eagles actually hatch (you should have heard the screaming that day!), grow, and fledge. By watching the powerful parenting of both eagle parents we've developed a rapport with the eagle families and celebrated their day successes. Just this month my third and fourth grade science students qualified for Washington's Justice and Liberty's eaglet naming contest. We've been watching Romeo and Juliet, Justice and Liberty, and Mr. President and First Lady as they hatch their eggs and raise their eaglets. The amazing nest cams provide my city children wonderful opportunities to watch actual American Bald Eagle parents interact in real time with their babies.
I'm requesting an Apple iPad tablet and a variety of eagle books for on-going ornithology lessons and activities.
With the tablet students can access bird websites like Audobon and Peterson. These websites are amazing as they list "Wow" facts and have recordings of the bird's calls. The tablet can be used for independent work or as a Ornithology Learning Center.
The bird books, including Eagles Up Close, Eagles: Amazing Picture and Facts About Eagles, Everything You Need to Know About Birds, and Eagle in the Sky: An Interactive Adventure About the Bald Eagle will be used as an extension of our ornithology lessons and eagle nest observations. The books can be used in small groups and for independent reading.
Birding is my passion and I'm so excited that so many of my students are as excited about birds as I am. This project can help us reach so many students to show them the amazing and inspiring world of the American Bald Eagle.
