This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our second grade class loves to read! We are a title 1 school located on a military base in South Carolina. We have students in both Airforce and Army families. Our class is 50% military. We are a diverse group with the military students having lived in different countries around the world and the 50 states; while most of those that are nonmilitry have not traved out of our state. We are a small town and most of the students in our class ride the bus to school. Our school is 100% free breakfast and lunch.
During second grade students are becoming independent readers and need to have their writing closely connected to what they read.
Our class enjoys working together to become great learners! We are hands on learners and especially love to learn about science and the world around us through social studies.
My Project
My students enjoy writing but struggle with choosing a topic. It is difficult for second graders to narrow their topic and focus on one area. The nonfiction books will give them background information they can relate to and help them see that interesting topics are right around them in their everyday lives. The organization will be used to store their ongoing writing.
Second graders struggle with getting their ideas down on paper.
We will use the nonfiction books to build background and begin writing a personal story. Once that story is on paper they then struggle with the actual handwriting and penmanship. The dry erase envelopes will be used so that the students can edit their writing without having to constantly erase and rewrite.
